Security and Stability in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific

Developments over the past few years have revealed that Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security are increasingly interlocked. Russia’s renewed attack on Ukraine in 2022 was not the only event to heighten awareness that countries like China and North Korea are influencing the course of war in Europe. Likewise, (nuclear) armament in the Indo-Pacific, especially by China and North Korea, affects European states. The outbreak of war in the Indo-Pacific would also have severe consequences for Europe. Consequently, European states, like those in the Indo-Pacific, have a strategic interest in peace and stability in both geographical areas and in deepening security and defense relations with like-minded partner countries. Closer cooperation is particularly appropriate in the area of (nuclear) non-proliferation and to promote confidence-building measures – also in view of the uncertain future of US security guarantees.

The research project “Security and Stability in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Regions – Common Challenges and Opportunities for Cooperation” aims to contribute to a sound understanding of how the two geographical areas are becoming increasingly interlinked in the security and defense policy sense and how developments in one “theater” could have an impact on the other. The aim is to identify previous collaborations, existing gaps, possible needs for collaboration, and synergies for strengthening strategic stability and arms control in the Indo-Pacific by Europe and vice versa.

To this end, the project will first examine the case study countries of France, Poland, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
